Flushing is a city in Genesee County in Michigan. The population was 8,389 at the 2010 census. The median age in the city was 45.1 years. 21.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 20.8% were from 25 to 44; 28.4% were from 45 to 64; and 21.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 46.1% male and 53.9% female. The racial makeup of the city was 94.8% White, 2.4% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.

Flushing History:

Flushing sprang up as a railroad town in the 1830s. Charles Seymour (formerly of Flushing, in New York) is credited with naming the small Michigan community. The original Flushing (located in the borough of Queens) was first settled in 1645 and is named after the city of Vlissingen, the Netherlands – also known as Flushing, Netherlands.

The Flint River flows through Flushing. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.79 square miles. Out of that 3.62 square miles is land and 0.17 square miles is water.

Flushing is considered a suburb of Flint. It is situated within the area of Flushing Charter Township, but is administratively autonomous.
